For as long as I can remember, nature and the environment has held a fascination for me.
Our planet is a wonderful place, whether it be an abundance of teeming life in the animal kingdom, amazing ecological diversity, the absolute enormity of vast tracts of wilderness, the awesome, untamed power of nature or simply the mystique of life itself.
Over time, humanity has exploited an abundance of natural resources with scant regard for the longer-term consequences. Whether it has been mineral exploitation, poor farming practices, pollution, the destruction of ancient forests, introduction of invasive species, political aspirations – the consequences of environmental degradation have resulted in widespread habitat and biodiversity loss.
Biodiversity is fundamental to humanity being able to sustain life on earth and it is imperative ecosystems are not allowed to degrade further.
Although there is evidence of isolated attempts to live more in harmony with the environment, the level of irreparable damage that has occurred is daunting. More alarmingly is the level of environmental degradation that continues today.
This situation is compounded by the impacts of global warming, a multitude of societal issues that result in an inability to meet the basic needs of all humans and of course, the current pandemic.
So, what can be done?
I am truly inspired by the YogaEcology vision of `creating a better world for all living beings’ and excited about the opportunities this represents.
First of all, for personal development though meditation, asana practice, and spirituality.
Secondly, a chance to address the collective challenges facing the world today through social transformation.
